K-POP CONTEST RULES
The contest registration deadline is OCTOBER 31st 23:59 (Extended to NOVEMBER 3rd, 23:59). Please do not register at the last minute!
ABSTRACT
You can cover:
- a k-pop dance,
- a k-pop related dance (examples: foreign member solos, non-Korean song versions, Asian countries groups that mostly promote in Korea, “studio choom” dances, Korean dance studio choreographies, Korean survival show performances)
Performances may be repeated from other events, as long as they have not been showcased on Baisun stage before!
Our recommended max number on stage is 9. If you choose to perform with more people, we do not take responsibility for your ability to fit everyone on stage, however we strongly recommend not exceeding the suggested number of people. For reference, the stage measurements are approximately 5 x 6.2 meters.
We also strongly advise against wearing full black, non-reflective outfits, due to the floor and surroundings on the stage being fully black, which may lead to limited visibility, especially if you’re doing floor-work. Make sure your dance will be visible to everyone!
MAIN CONTEST
There are four categories in the Main Contest: Solo, Duo, Small Group and Large Group. This contest is evaluated entirely by the judge panel based on the following criteria:
25%
Rhythm and musicality (Showing a good understanding and feeling of the music)
25%
Stage presence (Expression, ability to captivate the audience)
25%
Technique (Coordination, flexibility, form, basics)
15%
Image (Outfits, makeup, other visuals)
10%
Creativity (Adding your own character to the dance)
Lip syncing is considered as part of the dance. It is not mandatory or included in the judging criteria, but it will have its own checkbox. This checkbox can be used as a tiebreaker, if the judges cannot find consensus.
Original choreographies are not eligible for the Main Contest and have their own category below, due to complications that would arise in evaluation.
The group performances are distributed into two categories – Small Group for 3-5 people, and Large Group for 6 and more people and studios (groups which are formed in a studio setting – if the members have a dance trainer (the trainer is allowed to dance with the group)). For Large Group please keep in mind that the maximum recommended amount of people is 9 due to the stage size!
Time limits: Solo 1min15sec, Duo 2min, Small and Large Groups 3min
DEBUT CONTEST
This contest is meant for those who are going to dance on stage for the first time! In order to reduce pressure for beginners, we have a separate category for performances before the Main Contest. The evaluation criteria is the same as for the Main Contest, but only solo applications will be accepted.
It does not count as your “first time dancing on stage” if you: have performed a K-pop dance cover with a group before, have been performing with non-K-pop dances for a while, have performed in other contests, etc. It is hard to define a beginner, so in these cases we are asking for common sense when applying to this category.
If this is your first time dancing on stage, but you feel confident enough for the main contest, feel free to apply to that instead! It is fully up to you.
Time limit: Solo 1min15sec
ORIGINAL CHOREOGRAPHY CONTEST
This contest is for your own choreography! At least 50% of the dance should be created by you, and only K-pop songs are allowed for this category. This contest is evaluated entirely by the judge panel based on the following criteria:
30%
Technique (Coordination, flexibility, form, basics)
30%
Originality (Stylistic interpretations, original choreography)
20%
Rhythm and musicality (Showing a good understanding and feeling of the music)
10%
Image (Outfits, makeup, other visuals)
10%
Stage presence (Expression, ability to captivate the audience)
Time limits: Solo 1min15sec, Duo 2min, Group 3min
NON-CONTEST
Want to participate without competing? This will be a separate category, under which you can perform without the pressure of being evaluated by the judges. Time limits: Solo 1min15sec, Duo 2min, Group 3min.
ADDITIONAL NOMINATIONS
There may be additional nominations (1 place each) that will be announced during the awards.
APPLICATION AND PRE-SELECTION
Pre-selection results and performance schedules will be announced within two weeks after the registration closes.
The organizers leave themselves the right to ask applicants to change their contest category, in case we see obvious misunderstandings in category choices.
Due to limited time, all applications require a video audition (this should be YOU in the video). This video should be attached when registering. If you are using any props, they should be included in your audition video and described in the application to ensure we will be able to accommodate you.
The selection will prioritize giving an opportunity to perform to the highest number of people. This means one person can apply to two categories (NOT two performances in the same category), but in case of too many applications, groups will have advantage, and so will solos and duos of individuals who are not part of a group performance. If after these changes the number of applications is still too high, we will be asking the judges to evaluate your audition videos.
We also strongly request to choose age-appropriate clothing and choreographies. The organizers leave themselves the right to not accept applications in which minors’ performances are deemed inappropriate for their age.
If you have any requests for specific time placement within the contest, please list them and the reason in the application. After the schedules are released, there will be no option to change your spot.
PARTICIPANT TICKET ( IMPORTANT! )
Contest participants have a special discounted ticket. This ticket must be purchased in advance, before the contest application deadline, and is fixed at 22EUR. This will guarantee your ability to enter the event, no matter if you pass the pre-selection or not, and ensure that you will not be forced to purchase tickets at increased prices by the time that the pre-selection ends. This ticket is a mandatory part of your application.
If you do not pass the pre-selection, your ticket remains valid for an audience entrance. If you decide to not attend the event, you can either leave the fee as support for the event, or request a full refund until 30 days after the event.
If you pass the pre-selection, but do not attend the event due to other reasons outside of the organizers control, we are not able to provide a refund.
If one person wishes to register for two performances, they only need to purchase one ticket under their name in advance. In applications, please indicate that you are applying for two performances by noting this next to your name. When purchasing tickets, please make sure to correctly enter the names of all participants (for whom the tickets are bought) in relevant fields to ensure a smoother application review.
In case your both applications are accepted, you will be asked to pay an additional 10 EUR fee at the event door (in cash only).
ONE PERFORMANCE: 22 EUR (online ticket upon registration)
TWO PERFORMANCES: 22 EUR (online ticket upon registration) + 10 EUR (at the door in cash)
Please do not register at the last minute! After registration we will need to confirm all your files are properly working and you will receive an email with instructions on how to purchase the participant ticket, this is part of the application and must also be done before the deadline. Leave yourself (and us) some time for this!
STAGE PROPS
Stage props are allowed, as long as you inform us in your application form what you will be using, and whether you will need assistance getting these things on and off stage. Chairs and tables can be provided by us for any categories, however we strongly recommend against any large props due to limited space on the stage. The stairs leading up to the stage are rather narrow, and we will have limited space to store large items. We kindly ask you to provide all this information in advance so that we can make sure our volunteers will be able to take care of things smoothly.
Using glitter and liquids on stage is not allowed and can be cause for disqualification. Confetti, petals or similar things with a diameter of no less than 2cm are allowed. If you intend to use such, please inform us in advance (at least one week before the event).
Carrying props up and off the stage, cleaning up confetti should take up less than 1min before and after the performance. We kindly ask you to help out volunteers with cleaning up after your performance, to ensure the contest runs smoothly.
